Personal > Let The Gurkhas Stay (#8695)

How many of you (UK based) watched the news yesterday? Now - how many of you were as appalled as I was at the disgraceful way in which this government are treating the Gurkhas?

It is a situation I have been aware of for sometime - I live in Kent where they're based.

Why are we threatening these wonderful people with deportation?

Why are we refusing them the same pensions rights as the rest of our armed forces.

Why are we just turning a blind eye to their plight?

These men have fought along side us for decades, without question and with the utmost loyalty.

They are brave and loyal and have given their lives for us and yet we now treat them like this - it is a travesty and one we can all do something about.

there is an on-line petition

peitions.number.10.gov.uk

then go to most recent petitions and there is a petition asking the government to allow these wonderful people to stay.

It has until the end of November for us to sign. So far it has over 29,300 signatures.....please if you can add your own

They are soldiers from Nepal, who have fought alongside British troops for decades and are now being treated abominably by the UK government.

Apparently we would rather deport these wonderful people and allow the likes of Abu Hamza (terrorist) stay in Britain and claim benefits. Yet the Gurkhas who have given so much and just want to retire here or work here to benefit us are being turned away. it just beggars belief.

Thanx loobie. Its sad that people will go bananas over something like this. I know Britian is crowded, but the governmant should surely let these people, who have at least contributed to the country, stay where they are. Its shocking :(

I agree - its not right!
They should not be deported after giving so much for us.
why do they go and others stay getting all our money...

We can say this as much as we want but its not going to change the mind of the government. In my eyes they are scared incase any repercussions come if the deport the foreigners who claim all our money. No matter how much people disagree were not going to be able to influence the government on issues like this. but i would sign a petition if one was started......... :)

Corrected information (sorry loobie):-

The website address is:

petitions.number10.gov.uk/ghurkas

Thanks for bringing this to my attention too. I have just signed up.
My grandfather, great uncles, former husband and father in law all served alongside The Ghurka Regiment and were proud to do so.

Thanks for putting the right address Frances!!! I must double check my spellings!!

Glad you've signed up, the more the better. The Gurkha's are wonderful people, I see a lot of them as they're based with my local regiment (we have a major army base in my town). Whenever you see them they are so polite, such gentlemen and gentle men.

They deserve better.

A bit off-topic, but does the UK have means for foreigners who serve in their military to become citizens? I know it's an option in the US. Given some of the people who are allowed to stay in western countries (the Sep 11 flight-school dropouts received new visas six months AFTER the attacks) I don't think it's too much to offer, assuming they want to become Britons of course.

Today the Gurkhas find out if they have won the right to stay in the UK. I'm still appalled that this is up for debate at all, surely after serving us with such loyalty they deserve to be allowed to stay if they so wish?

After risking their lives for a country that isn't yet their own surely they deserve to stay here with the same army pension as the soldiers they fought along side! They risked their lives in just the same way.

We allow illegal immigrants and terrorists to stary here claiming benefits giving them huge houses and allow them to preach hate and yet these men who have fought and continue to fight for us are denied the right to stay!

Lets hope that ou government finally see sense and do the decent thing - though I wouldn't hold your breath.
